BIOGRAPHY

My name is Marina Carlizza, aka ‘Mary_Ma’. Although I have shown a keen interest
and joyful passion for painting and drawing since my early school years, my later
choices led me towards work experiences that had nothing to do with painting.
Nevertheless, the secret need to express the most hidden parts of my personality
eventually found its place in my work, emerging precisely through the shapes and
colours of my paintings.
My way of painting can be traced back to a form of abstract expressionism also
known as action painting, or drip printing. My works do not follow fixed patterns or
shapes; it is the colours that prevail, and the creation happens through their movement
on the surface of the board. My paintings change over time until they fix an image that
the eye can capture. Fluid forms are imprinted with the power of gesture.
The spontaneous sign, as a transcription of energy and an extension of the action
itself, slowly changes as it interacts with the universe and its gravity. Wood is the
surface I prefer because it belongs to my experience; the colours I choose are not the
traditional ones, such as tempera or oil paints, but rather the industrial ones, used in
everyday life to colour and protect any type of surface. These colours must always and
only be white, black, red, yellow, and blue, and cannot be mixed, but always remain
distinct and defined from each other. Any element of everyday life can serve as a tool
for my painting and can find a place in my works.
I paint for myself. Painting is a means to express my personality, my thoughts, my
feelings. It is the rediscovery of my ancient past and its taking shape on the board.
